How to Choose a Network Switch for IP Cameras
Choose a CCTV switch by PoE budget, port count, uplink capacity, VLAN requirements and installation environment.
Port planning
Count current cameras, uplinks and any other powered devices. Reserve ports when expansion is likely.
PoE budget
Add expected camera power consumption and compare it with the switch's total PoE budget. Consider night-time IR load for outdoor cameras.
Uplink planning
Aggregate camera bitrate at the switch and make sure the uplink can carry it with sensible headroom. This is particularly important when several edge switches feed one core link.
Managed or unmanaged
Managed switches can provide VLANs, monitoring, port controls and diagnostics. Unmanaged switches can be appropriate for simple isolated installations.
Environment
Outdoor cabinets, industrial areas and long cable routes may require different switch, enclosure and protection choices than a clean indoor network room.
Commissioning
Document switch IP, port-to-camera mapping, PoE consumption, uplink speed and VLAN configuration.
