Static IP vs DHCP Reservations for CCTV Cameras
Compare static addressing and DHCP reservations for CCTV cameras and learn how to keep addressing predictable and maintainable.
Static IP
Manual IP, subnet mask and gateway settings can work well on small dedicated CCTV networks, provided the address plan is documented and conflicts are avoided.
DHCP reservation
A DHCP server can consistently assign an address based on a camera's MAC address, centralizing address management while retaining predictable addressing.
Avoid conflicts
Do not manually assign an address inside a DHCP pool unless your design specifically accounts for it. Duplicate addresses cause intermittent and confusing faults.
Document the device
Record camera name, MAC, IP, location, switch port and cable ID. Documentation becomes increasingly important as the number of devices grows.
Choose a consistent policy
Either approach can work. The important goals are predictable addresses, a controlled range and accurate documentation.
