Fibre Optic CCTV Backbone Planning: A Practical Guide
Plan fibre links between CCTV buildings, switches and NVR networks with attention to distance, optics, protection and bandwidth.
Why fibre is useful
Fibre is well suited to long-distance CCTV links and provides electrical isolation between locations. It can be especially valuable between separate buildings.
Fibre does not power cameras
The fibre backbone carries network data. Remote cameras still need local PoE switches or suitable local power arrangements.
Choose the complete link
Match fibre type, transceivers or SFPs, connector type, distance and switch compatibility. Do not select an optic independently of the equipment on both ends.
Bandwidth planning
Calculate the aggregate camera traffic crossing the fibre link and consider future expansion, playback and other network services.
Installation discipline
Protect fibre from excessive bending and physical damage. Use suitable enclosures, splice management and labeling.
Test before handover
Verify optical link status, negotiated Ethernet speed, packet stability and actual camera traffic before the system is accepted.
