NVR Decoding vs Recording Capacity: Why Live View Can Fail
Understand the difference between NVR recording bandwidth and decoding capacity when many high-resolution cameras are displayed.
Recording and viewing are different jobs
An NVR can sometimes record more camera streams than it can decode simultaneously for live display. Recording capacity and display decoding should therefore be checked separately.
Typical symptom
You may see cameras recording correctly but experience black tiles, limited multi-view layouts or reduced resolution when many cameras are opened at once. This can indicate decoding limits rather than a storage failure.
Main stream vs substream
Using substreams for multi-camera thumbnails can dramatically reduce decoding demand. Full-screen or playback views can then switch to the higher-quality stream when needed.
Check the exact specification
Look for decoding format, resolution, total decoding performance and supported simultaneous display modes for the exact NVR model. Product families can have very different limits.
Design for the operator
Ask how the system will actually be used: 4-way view, 16-way view, wall display, full-screen switching or remote monitoring. Size the recorder around that real workflow.
