NVR vs DVR vs XVR: Understanding CCTV Recorders
Compare NVR, DVR and XVR recorders across camera type, cabling, bandwidth, recording and upgrade considerations.
NVR
A Network Video Recorder normally records IP camera streams delivered over Ethernet or another network path. Incoming bandwidth is a key specification, especially as camera bitrates increase.
DVR
A Digital Video Recorder is traditionally associated with analog CCTV over coaxial cable. Supported analog formats and resolutions vary by model.
XVR
An XVR is generally designed to support multiple HD-over-coax technologies and can be useful when upgrading an existing coaxial installation. Exact compatibility must be checked against the recorder and camera models.
Choosing between them
IP systems can offer flexible network architecture and easy expansion, while coaxial systems can be practical where existing cable is reusable. Select based on requirements, existing infrastructure and future plans.
What to check
For an NVR, check incoming bandwidth, decoding, codec and storage support. For DVR/XVR, verify supported camera technologies and resolutions. Confirm exact compatibility before purchase.
