CCTV VLANs: When and Why to Separate Camera Traffic
Understand how VLANs can separate CCTV traffic from office computers and guest Wi-Fi while improving organization and access control.
Why segment CCTV
A dedicated camera VLAN can reduce unnecessary exposure, simplify troubleshooting and make network policy easier to understand.
Basic architecture
Camera ports are commonly access ports in the CCTV VLAN. Managed-switch uplinks may carry the VLAN as tagged traffic, while routing and firewall policy control access from management networks.
Discovery can change
Some camera discovery mechanisms depend on Layer-2 behavior. When camera and NVR networks are separated, automatic discovery may stop working even though IP connectivity exists.
Security is broader than VLANs
Use strong credentials, current supported firmware, restricted management access and sensible firewall rules. VLANs complement these controls; they do not replace them.
Document the design
Record VLAN ID, subnets, switch ports, NVR addresses and permitted management paths so the network can be maintained safely.
